a necessity. This is particularly true in the diabetic and the nondiabetic patient with "small vessel" or end-artery disease. Unlike occlusive disease affecting major arterial trunks, these individuals have involvement of small arteries and arterioles supplying the skin and subcutaneous tissue where development of a collateral network is at a minimum. Consequently, when injury or infection increases the tissue requirement for oxygen that this arteriolar capillary system is unable to supply, tissue hypoxia and necrosis quickly

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss and vertigo associated with arterial occlusive disease: three case reports and literature review.
Sudden sensorineural hearing loss and vertigo (SSNHLV) has multifactorial causes, of which viral, autoimmune and vascular insufficiency are the most common. The therapeutic management for SSNHLV includes antiviral drugs, corticosteroids, vasodilators, normovolemic hemodilution therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Vertebrobasilar occlusive disease and carotid occlusive disease are seldom relat...
متن کاملMultiple occlusive retinal arteritis in both eyes of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.
PURPOSE To report multiple occlusive retinal arteritis as a complication of rheumatoid arthritis. CASE A 67-year-old woman developed superotemporal branch retinal artery occlusion in both eyes, together with arterial sheathing and large cotton wool patches around the optic disc, in the course of rheumatoid arthritis with moderate activity. OBSERVATIONS Fluorescein angiography disclosed dela...
متن کاملHyperbaric oxygenation in peripheral ischaemic lesions in infants.
Acute peripheral arterial occlusion may lead to gangrene, with loss of parts of arms and legs. Three infants with disseminated intravascular clotting developed dark red discoloration of the tips of fingers and toes which progressed proximally. Repeated hyperbaric oxygenation treatments caused regression of the demarcation line and further progression of necrosis stopped.
متن کاملHyperbaric oxygen therapy for vaso-occlusive crises in nine patients with sickle-cell disease.
INTRODUCTION Vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) is the most frequent complication of sickle-cell disease and is associated with significant acute bone pain. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for severe VOC. METHODS We report our retrospective experience with HBOT in VOC in nine patients and 15 HBOT sessions. RESULTS All nine patients had recei...
متن کاملVeno–veno–arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation treatment in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome and septic shock
In acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with refractory septic shock, isolated veno–venous (VV) or veno–arterial (VA) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) may lead to differential hypoxia or inadequate tissue perfusion [1]. In this context, MacLaren et al. [2] showed that central ECMO improved the outcomes by guaranteeing systemic oxygenation without differential hypoxia. However, c...
